Veneers Q & A

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers involve covering the outside of your tooth with a specialized material to improve the appearance of your teeth. Originally developed to enhance the smiles of Hollywood stars decades ago, veneers remain one of the popular and well-established procedures in cosmetic dentistry.

Are there different types of veneers?

At Fort Worth Dental Care PLLC, Dr. Brogdon uses different types of dental veneer techniques. Depending on your needs and aesthetic goals, he may suggest:

Direct technique

With the direct technique, also called dental bonding, Dr. Brogdon bonds composite resin directly to the outside of your tooth.

Indirect technique

This method usually requires two visits. During the first, Dr. Brogdon prepares your teeth and takes impressions. He places a temporary covering on your teeth while a dental laboratory uses the impressions to fabricate your veneers.

Dr. Brogdon discusses material options with you beforehand, but porcelain and pressed ceramic are the most common materials for dental veneers.

In two to three weeks, you return to the office so Dr. Brogdon can replace the temporary coverings with your new veneers. He bonds the wafer-thin veneers to your teeth, leaving you with a brilliant new smile.

Who gets dental veneers?

Veneers can correct a variety of imperfections in your teeth:

  • Worn down, chipped, or broken teeth
  • Discolorations due to root canals, medications, or large fillings
  • Irregularly sized or shaped teeth
  • Crooked or uneven teeth
  • Gaps between teeth

You may not be a candidate for veneers if you have any of these dental problems:

  • Gum disease
  • Tooth decay
  • Root canal infection

What are the benefits of dental veneers?

Veneers offer multiple advantages over dental crowns. First, veneers require Dr. Brogdon to remove much less of your natural tooth material than getting a crown does, resulting in a more comfortable procedure. If you have large fillings or minimal tooth structure, Dr. Brogdon may recommend veneers.

Other benefits of dental veneers include:

  • A beautiful smile
  • Durable, long-lasting materials
  • Stain-resistant
  • Customized colors that match your natural teeth
