Emergency Dentist Q & A

What is a dental emergency?

Some injuries require immediate medical care, and oral trauma is no exception. Dr. Brogdon should be your first call after an accident that leads to any of the following mouth injuries:

  • A knocked-out tooth
  • A cracked tooth
  • A fractured tooth
  • A tooth that becomes loose in its socket

Infections or abscesses also pose a severe health risk and should receive treatment immediately. Signs that you may have a dental abscess or mouth infection include:

  • Severe toothaches
  • Pus in your mouth
  • A hard, painful bump in your gums
  • Extreme pain when biting down

If your mouth has cuts, tears, or puncture wounds that won’t stop bleeding, Dr. Brogdon may advise you to visit the emergency room.

What do I do if my tooth gets knocked out?

A knocked-out tooth is a critical dental emergency that requires urgent care to save your tooth. The first thing you should do is call Dr. Brogdon to set up an emergency dentist appointment.

Before your appointment, try to handle the tooth as little as possible, especially the root. If the tooth is completely knocked out, you can rinse it off and store it in a clean container or small amount of milk. If it’s still in your mouth but dislodged from your gum socket, be very careful not to swallow the tooth.

Which dental problems don’t require emergency care?

Some accidents and injuries cause damage to your teeth that require medical attention, just not right away. You should call the office and explain your situation to Dr. Brogdon, but chances are you can wait a few days before seeing him.

The following dental problems are not emergencies:

  • A chipped tooth that doesn’t hurt
  • A temporary crown popping off
  • Temporary gum irritation that quickly returns to normal
